Jim produces large canvases: these landscape oil paintings could be described as abstracts in that they do not depict a scene or place, and that the overall aesthetic content is more important than the physical thing that is depicted. They commonly allude to the photographic process: the way this media captures movement: to freeze an instant or to show the blurring of natures chaotic movement through time.

Despite this seemingly analytical approach to landscape his paintings are still primarily emotional; they are atmospheric; evocative.
